"You really thought you'd get her back?" Lucy laughed cruelly.
My mind blanked in shock. Of course I was getting her back. I had murdered a thousand evil men.
Spent years doing all this, for something I was guaranteed.
But I wasn't guaranteed.
Was I?
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
I shot up, heart pounding in my ears. My throat felt swollen and tense. It was just a bad dream.
I was getting Emma back. I was.

"Jesus, dude, wake up already. It's, like, fucking 2 o'clock in the afternoon-"
Frank cut off when I pointed a gun to his chin. "Whoa." He chuckled nervously. "I'm your friend.
Remember?"
"Sorry." I said casually. "I've been a bit jumpy lately." I put the pistol back under my pillow.
"No dip." he said, looking pale. "Why do you have that, anyways? I don't even think they're legal
in this state."
I shrugged and rolled my eyes. "Everything's illegal nowadays. Besides, I have it for self defense.
This isn't exactly a great neighborhood."
"True." He said. He looked more relaxed now, despite the fact that I was in possession of
something quite illegal.
"It really is 2 o'clock. Don't you have to be at work?"
The library.
"Shit." I shot out of bed and speed dressed. I said a goodbye as I went out the door.

I got to the library 5 minutes later, over 4 hours late. No one seemed to really care. Not even
the boss, who just waved off my apology.
I shrugged and wheeled the return cart over to my first destination: mystery. While putting
some away, Lucy appeared beside me. My nightmare came to mind and I tensed up.
"What's up?" I asked politely. I had fucked up once, I didn't need him to think of me as
insubordinate.
"Oh, nothing. Just really bored."
Great.
"Anyway, have you seen my son lately? He's been avoiding me."
Did he really think I gave a shit about his daddy issues? I shrugged. "Last time I saw him was a
couple of nights ago. Number 940."
Lucy nodded thoughtfully. "All right. I'll talk with you later tonight."
"Poof." I said as he materialized away. Someone tapped me on the arm, and I dropped the stack
of books I had been holding.
"Oh, I'm sorry. I didn't mean to scare you." a pretty voice said.
I grabbed the bunch up in my arms and said, "It's okay..." I trailed off when I saw that her face
was just as pretty as her voice. Everything about her was perfect. Her skin, her hair, her lips...
She smiled and I just about melted. "I need help finding a book."
"Oh, right." I said nervously. "What's the name?"
"Catcher in the Rye."
"Nice," I said approvingly. "That's one of my favorite books."
"Mine too." she replied while following me to the section where the book was located. "I've only
read it, like, 20 times."
I laughed. "Right?" I handed it to her. "Here you go."
"Thanks." she replied. "Want to continue this conversation over coffee?"
My smile dropped clean off my face. "I'm sorry. I have a girlfriend."
"Oh," she smiled a bit sadly. "That's too bad." She walked away, leaving me standing alone,
miserable.
And I couldn't understand why.
